Process Analyzers and Sample Systems Study Guide
Analyzer troubleshooting should separate the process sample, sample conditioning, sensing principle, calibration reference, analyzer electronics, and downstream signal path.
A healthy analyzer can report a misleading value if the sample is not representative because of plugging, condensation, poor flow, contamination, transport delay, or unsuitable pressure and temperature.
Use the correct measurement principle and reference standard before adjusting zero or span, then verify the final signal through the control-system input and display.
- Study pH, ORP, conductivity, oxygen, infrared gas analysis, and gas-chromatography fundamentals.
- Treat filters, regulators, drains, heat tracing, fast loops, sample tubing, and carrier/reference utilities as part of the measurement chain.
- Separate sample-system faults from sensor faults and downstream scaling faults.
- Record as-found and as-left results when the procedure requires them.
- Do not calibrate away a process or sample-system problem.
