Control Valve Troubleshooting Guide
A control-valve problem should be diagnosed as a signal → positioner → actuator → valve → process chain instead of replacing parts or retuning the controller before the fault is isolated.
Compare controller output, expected signal, actual valve position, actuator energy, and process response. The point where expected behavior stops is the most useful clue.
Stiction and deadband can create cycling that looks like poor PID tuning, so trend commanded position, actual position, and process variable before changing tuning.
- Verify electrical or pneumatic command signal first.
- Check actuator supply, regulators, tubing, solenoids, or electrical power.
- Compare commanded position with position feedback and mechanical travel.
- Confirm intended fail action and actuator/valve arrangement.
- Separate cavitation from flashing before selecting a remedy.
- Check valve sizing and process authority before blaming controller tuning.
