PID Control Study Guide
PID control is a core process-control topic for Instrumentation and Control Technician study. A controller compares process variable with setpoint and adjusts output so the process moves toward the desired condition.
Troubleshooting should follow the whole measurement → controller → final control element → process → measurement chain before tuning is changed.
Proportional responds to present error, integral to accumulated error over time, and derivative to how quickly the selected signal is changing.
- Verify PV, SP, controller mode, output, and final-element response.
- Check direct/reverse action before changing tuning.
- Use bumpless transfer to minimize unnecessary output steps when switching modes.
- Separate tuning problems from stiction, measurement noise, dead time, output limits, and failed field devices.
- Cascade control depends on a healthy, appropriately faster secondary loop.
