PLC, DCS, HMI and SCADA Study Guide
PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA systems overlap but perform different roles. Instrumentation troubleshooting becomes easier when field signals, I/O, controller logic, networks, operator interfaces, and final control elements are treated as one architecture.
Trace a signal from the field device through terminals, barriers or isolators, input hardware, scaling, logic or control strategy, output hardware, final control element, and HMI/SCADA indication.
A bad displayed value does not automatically mean a bad transmitter; the error can exist in field measurement, wiring, scaling, communications, tag mapping, or display configuration.
- PLC: field I/O, logic, permissives, interlocks, and output execution.
- DCS: integrated continuous process control, operator stations, histories, alarms, and distributed controllers.
- HMI: operator visualization and interaction with controller data.
- SCADA: supervisory monitoring and control across distributed assets or process areas.
- Use trends, alarms, event history, and end-to-end signal checks before changing live control logic.
